- Feeding your cows at night or not allowing access to feed during the day increases the odds that they will calve during the day.
- Scour vaccines should be timed so that the annual booster is given aproxx 5-7 weeks prior to the start of calving. This year is our first year using a new scour vaccine that includes Cryptosporidium, a protozoa we have not been able to vaccinate for in the past.
- Is your calving barn and supplies ready? Most pathogens that cause navel infections and scours are introduced in the calving area – clean, well bedded calving pens go a long way for calf health.
- Calving rule of thumb before you intervene: Once you see feet, the calf should be delivered within a half hour for a cow and 1 hour for a heifer.
