Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston Soccer Preview

Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston returns a veteran girls soccer lineup from last autumn’s 3-14 squad that lost 8-0 in the section tournament to the top seed, St. Charles/Lewiston-Altura/Lanesboro. For the second straight season, the Warriors return nine of 11 starters among 11 letter winners. All-Conference forward/goal keeper and leading scorer Josie Foster graduated along with key midfielder Addie Fruechte. But 2023 All-Conference forward Loisah Gay is back after an injury forced her to miss all her junior season in 2024. Other honorees are three-time Honorable Mention All-Conference senior midfielder Siri Konkel and two-time Honorable Mention senior forward Macy Krause. Konkel and Foster were Second Team All-Region selections. Other senior letter winners are defenders Stephanie Ideker and Sophie Blocker plus forward Ella Hoscheit. Lily Klinski completes a seven-member senior class. Junior letter winner Alexis Qualy brings back considerable experience in goal. Other junior letterwinners are defender Brairy Proulx and a trio of midfielders: Bristol Kuennen, Lillian Thies and Kya Deck. The youngest letterwinner is sophomore midfielder Kristen Schmidt. Chris Jandt enters his 11th season as head coach, aided again by Valerie Williams, who was last year’s Section 1A Assistant Coach of the Year.

On the boys side, the Warriors return six of 12 letterwinners, including five starters from last year’s 1-12-1 season that ended with a 1-0 section loss versus Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Back in the attack are senior strikers Quinton Meldahl and Landon O’Heron along with senior midfielder Alex Henke and junior midfielders Ayden Marschall and Anthony Hahn. Letterwinner Ayden Collins makes four seniors. Replacing the starting defense is a major challenge for veteran coach Jay Marschall, who is mentoring some of the same lads that he did when they were kindergarteners. The boys open on August 28 at Cotter before a home rematch with P-E-M on Sept. 2.
