Second-Half Surge Spurs Spring Grove Girls Past Kingsland

February 16, 2024 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls finally found their shooting touch in the second half, during which they nearly doubled (39 points) their first-half scoring (20 points) to complete a conference sweep of Kingsland, 59-43, at Spring Valley. Kinley Soiney achieved a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double and Kylie Hammel added 15 points for the Lions (10-0 SEC, 14-2). Katelyn Hauser scored 22 points for the Knights (8-4, 5-3 SEC).

The Lions trailed 22-20 at halftime before seizing the lead for good with a 15-to-3-point run (four 3-point baskets and a traditional 3-point play) for a 35-28 lead. After both teams added 10 points, Spring Grove pulled away with a nine-point run.

After shooting a chilly 21% the first half, the Lions shot 41% after the break. Eight of their season-high 11 treys came after halftime. For the night, the Grove girls attempted a season-most 34 shots beyond the 3-point arc where they outscored their hosts by 21 points in a 16-point victory. Soiney went 4 for 9 from both inside and beyond the arc and buried 7 of 9 free throws.

There were plenty of whistles as 37 fouls led to 42 free throws. Neither squad gained ground at the foul line where the Lions hit 12 of 23 (52%) and the Knights 11 of 19 (58%). Spring Grove, previously at home, had defeated Kingsland, 52-44.
