Second-Half Surge Lifts Lion Boys past Kingsland, 50-39

February 22, 2024 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove boys scored the first 15 points of the second half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and defeat visiting Kingsland, 52-39. Neither team shot as well as in their first meeting eight days previous (SG won 60-40). The Lions improved to 12-1, 10-1 SEC) while extending their winning streak to 13 in the series with Kingsland. Wade Grinde’s guys had already won the SEC East while the Knights (10-3, 8-3) are still competing near the top of the SEC West.

Two Lions came close to double-doubles with Jaxon Strinmoen scoring a game-high 20 points along with 9 rebounds. Ben Udstuen put in 9 points and rebounded 10 times. Elijah Solum added 14 points. Jayden Brink led Kingsland with 19 points.

After the first-half frustration of hitting only 5 of 25 shots, Spring Grove scored on seven of its first 10 possessions of the second half and eventually more than doubled (35 points) its first-half point production (17). Meanwhile, the visitors, who led 24-17 at halftime, went 27 possessions after intermission without a basket, by which time they trailed, 46-31.

The Lions played with an acceptable 11 turnovers but finished with weak 31% shooting from the field. However, the Knights managed only 28% success. Both were much more successful at the free throw line where Grove hit 16 of 23 (70%) and KHS 10 of 15 (67%).

The Lion B-team also completed a season sweep with a 43-26 win. Spring Grove also took both junior high contests.
