Rollie Hale Dubbs, 82, passed away June 3, 2025, at St. Marys Mayo, Rochester. Rollie was born on February 3, 1943, to Wally and Gladys (Gilbertson) Dubbs at the corner of Rush Creek and the Root River. He was born, raised, and spent his entire life on Ferry Street. Rollie was baptized and confirmed at Rushford Lutheran Church and graduated from Rushford High School in 1961. In 1962 Rollie entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Phoenix, Ariz. He served until an honorable discharge in 1963 after his mother and brother died. He returned home to help run the family business, Dubbs’ Bar. In 1966 he met the love of his life, JoAnn Schmeling. She chased him until she caught him and they were married June 23, 1967. In 1970 Rollie attended heavy equipment school and worked in construction in the area until he was hired at Fillmore County Highway Department where he spent 20 years before retiring in 2005.
Rollie loved being outdoors, fishing, ginseng hunting, spending time on the Root River and Rush Creek, trips up north and “walking the dogs.” Rollie’s biggest enjoyment was his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Many of these kids also carry his love for the outdoors, fishing, the creek and the river along, with his beautiful blue eyes.
Rollie is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jo; daughters Joell (Dale) Brand and Desiree (Dan) Erickson, and son Rollin (Joy) Dubbs; grandchildren Parker, Logan (Krista), Keela (Tyler), Reid (Taylor), and Blake (Shayna); great-grandchildren Camille, Ivie, Lane, Ella, Ayla, Creed, Bronx, Easton and Morgan.
Rollie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Warney and Larry, and sister Nancy.
A celebration of life will be Sunday, June 15 at the Rushford American Legion from 12-3 p.m. Rollie donated his body for medical research to Mayo Clinic. A burial will be at a later date at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Preston.
