Robert Papenfuss obituary, Fillmore County Journal

February 23, 1948–July 21, 2026

Robert “Bob” Papenfuss, 78, of Houston, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on February 23, 1948. He attended La Crescent High School before enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served with the 809th Engineering Battalion, helping construct the “Freedom Highway” through Thailand into Vietnam. Bob was honorably discharged in 1969.

After returning home, he met the love of his life, Gayle. They were united in marriage on December 22, 1972, and together they welcomed two children, Matthew and Laura. They made their first home in Baltimore, Maryland, before returning to Minnesota and settling in Houston, where Bob spent the remainder of his life.

Bob worked as a mechanic throughout his career before retiring from Mathy Construction in Sparta. He had a natural talent for repairing just about anything and was always willing to help or give advice on how to get you back up and running.

He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, listening to classic country music, watching a good western on television, spending time in his workshop, and being outdoors hunting or fishing. Bob cherished time with his family. He was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren.

In 2017, Bob was diagnosed with mouth cancer, a battle he faced with determination and resilience. In 2025, he was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a form of blood cell cancer. Throughout both illnesses, Bob met every challenge with quiet courage and the same steadfast spirit that defined his life.

Bob is lovingly survived by his wife of 53 years, Gayle Papenfuss; his children Matthew (Christina) Papenfuss and Laura Breeser (Wayne), his grandchildren Ethan (Jessica) Papenfuss and Allison Papenfuss (fiancé Wyatt Boberg), his brothers Richard, Ray (Bonda), Steve, Tom (Sue), and David (Theresa); his sisters Barb (Mark) Kuether, Jan Papenfuss, and Della Papenfuss; his brother-in-law Wendall (Julie) Engelien, his sisters-in-law Lynelle Sibich, Dee Eason, and Vicki Engelien; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Cleo and Florence Papenfuss, his brother William Papenfuss, his brothers-in-law William Engelien, Greg Engelien, Les Littlefield, Ned Sibich, and Rick Eason; and his sisters-in-law Cheryl Littlefield and Sue Papenfuss.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers of St. Croix Hospice, Live Well Home Care, the Gundersen Hematology Department, blood donors, Houston County Veteran Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Houston Clinic, for the exceptional care, kindness, and support shown to Bob throughout his journey.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Hoff Funeral Home in Houston, Minnesota, with a visitation starting one hour prior to the service.

Hoff Funeral Home in Houston is assisting the family with arrangements.
