Richard “Rick” Evan VonWald, III

February 4, 2025 by Fillmore County Journal 10 Comments

Richard VonWald III obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Richard “Rick” Evan VonWald, III, age 66, of Chatfield, Minn., currently residing in Mesa, Ariz., died on February 2, 2025, at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

He was born on January 19, 1959, in Chatfield, Minn., to Richard (Dick) VonWald, Jr. and Rosemary (Adams) VonWald. He grew up on the family farm near Chatfield, attended Chatfield Public Schools, and graduated from Chatfield High School in 1977. In 1979, Rick married Deb Hurley and later had three children: Evan, Ashley and Emily.

Rick enjoyed watching his children and now his grandchildren play sports, never missing an opportunity to see one of them play. He also loved all Minnesota sports and “coaching” them from the couch, hoping they could hear him through the TV. Rick took pleasure in spending time at the casino, playing cards and never missed a night of Bingo.

Rick is survived by his wife Deb, his children Evan (Lynn) VonWald of Chatfield, Ashley (Dylan) Hansen of Plainview, and Emily (Sam) Brekke of Preston; grandchildren Austin Storm, Isabelle VonWald, Abigail VonWald, Gabrielle VonWald, Camden Brekke, Kendall Brekke and Cayden Brekke; sisters Teri Jarland of Harmony and Tami (Tim) Larson of Chatfield; sisters-in-law Caryn (Joe) Erickson of Kearney, Nebr., Chari (Todd) Kruegel of Spring Valley, and Dayna (Greg) LaPlante of Chatfield; brother-in-law Dan (Peg) Hurley of Chatfield, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dick and Rosemary VonWald; in-laws Bob and Ardys Hurley, and brother-in-law Brett Jarland.

A memorial service will be held at a later date with family and close friends.

Deb and family: I am saddened to hear of your tremendous loss of Rick. I remember a few classes we shared in high school, how close our birthdays were, and how quietly he could do something to make us laugh in class. May the God of all comfort bring grace and peace to your family at this time. You have my prayers as you navigate this new chapter.

As a neighbor and a close high school friend, Rick has always had a very special place in my heart! The things we did are some of the best memories growing up. He was always there for me and I will forever be in his debt.. Please comfort yourselves knowing what a great guy he was. I send my love and prayers

Hugs to all of Rick’s family. Thinking of how quiet he was cheering at the games 😀😉 and in high school his convertible bronco , he will be missed by many.
