Siri Konkel hit four of five free throws in the final 19 seconds as the Spring Grove girls held off Schaeffer Academy, 42-38, on Dec. 12 at Rochester. Grove overcame cold 26% shooting with superb ball-handling, only five turnovers – believed to be a program record. Schaeffer shot much better (43%) but not nearly as often. With 27 turnovers, Schaeffer attempted only 40 shots to Spring Grove’s 67.

Kylie Hammel led all scorers with 16 points to go with 4 steals and 3 assists. Siri Konkel put in 11 points along with 6 steals and 5 assists (only one turnover). Emerson Ingvalson added 6 points and 6 rebounds. The Grove girls were playing without their leading scorer Kinley Soiney. Schaeffer had three girls in double figures: Linnea Ekbom with 12 points plus 11 points apiece from Lily Morrissey and Gabriella Buehler.

It was tight all night. There were only four lead changes, but neither team led by more than six points. Spring Grove outscored the home team by two points in each half. Each team scored seven points at the free throw line. Grove hit only 3 for 18 beyond the 3-point arc, but it was just enough. Schaeffer went only 1 for 3.

A driving basket by Kylie Hammel put Spring Grove ahead for good, 36-34, with five minutes to play. Two steals and another dribble drive bucket by Emersion Ingvalson helped maintain the lead until Konkel put it away at the foul line.

Spring Grove has now won the last 10 games against those big-city Lions and dominate the all-time series, 26 to 1.
