Ramon “Ray” Wickett, 89, of Decorah, Iowa, formerly of Canton and Mabel, Minn., died Monday, November 11, 2024, at Barthell Eastern Star Home.
Ray was born August 11, 1935, in Canton, Minn., to Frank and Beth (Torgenrude) Wickett. In 1954 he graduated from the Canton High School and on November 30, 1956, was united in marriage to Lorraine Hagen at the Mabel First Lutheran Church. He farmed in the Canton area until 1966 when he and Lorraine operated Fareway Foods in Mabel. He then worked at Boyum IGA until they started another Fareway Foods in 1978. They operated that until 1982 when he went to work for Housker Meats in Mabel. In 1992 they moved to Arizona until 2001, when they moved to Waukon and later, Decorah.
Ray had served on the Mabel Fire Department and Mabel Cooperative Telephone Board.
Ray is survived by his wife Lorraine of Decorah, two sons, Steven of Florida and David of Mabel; grandchildren Amy (Nathan) Kampschroer and Aaron Wickett, both of Mabel; great-grandchildren Eden and Saige Kampschoer and Remi Wickett; and two brothers, Frank of Anoka, Minn., and Larimore of Indianapolis, Ind.
He was preceded by his parents, and three sisters: Gloria Whitney, Maribeth Wickett, and Violet Vander Linden.
As per Ramon’s wishes, he is cremated with a private family burial in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
