Have you been wishing for some “common sense” in government? How about demanding some common decency first. Common sense requires common life experiences, which vary even amongst friends and family. Common decency, however, can be seen and delivered among complete strangers. One soul seeing another, recognizing a truth that is self-evident: That all are created equal and blessed with dignity in the image of God.
When Donald Trump angrily pointed his finger and spewed those words, he wasn’t just disparaging and dismissing one nameless reporter off-screen. He was betraying his opinion of all women. He was pointing at your wife, your mother, your sister. Your daughter. If your daughter questions you, would you call her Piggy and tell her to shut up? Were you ever bullied in school? Maybe someone made fun of your weight, your teeth, your nose, your social awkwardness … your disability. That’s your president. He’s done all of that and more.
Donald Trump hates anyone who dares to disagree or even question him, but he reserves his deepest hatred for women and minorities. You know – those black people who are “eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats,” and those tens of thousands of brown Minnesotans he calls “garbage.” His administration is moving to send back thousands who came here legally, who helped our soldiers in Afghanistan, who fled civil war and unrest in Somalia and Haiti, who became business owners and taxpayers in Minnesota, who were invited to fill empty jobs in Springfield, Ohio. This administration has drastically cut immigration allowances, but are giving priority to white South Africans. That’s right: former Apartheid can come, black and brown cannot.
I can hear people now: “But they don’t assimilate,” “they wear hijabs” and pray at weird times! They drive badly! Sharia law is coming!
OK, then do you think we should deport Amish back to Germany? Seriously, for 300 years, they still haven’t “assimilated” … they wear bonnets and beards and colorless clothing. They don’t work on Sunday – Amish law is coming! Jeepers, they still drive horse and buggies on our highways! I’m surprised a Somalian hasn’t hit one – enough white drivers have.
Nobody is out to zip tie Amish kids or pepper spray their elders – they add to our rich culture. But it’s ok for masked gunmen to raid a high-rise apartment at night, drag sleeping Hispanic kids out of bed – some naked, because they can’t afford AC – and zip tie them together while their parents are detained and their homes trashed. That happened. All found “legal,” none charged.
Dismiss me as a left-wing lunatic, if you must. But when you look in the mirror, remember who pointed at your daughter and called her Piggy. Look in the mirror and demand common decency. Please.
