“When God began to create the heavens and the earth – the earth was without shape or form, … God said, “Let the earth produce every kind of living thing: livestock, crawling things and wildlife.” And that’s what happened. God made every kind of wildlife, every kind of livestock and every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw how good it was. Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us …” God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them. God blessed them…God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good.” (Genesis 1:1-2a,24-26a, 27-28a, Common English Bible)
My husband and I just got a new puppy; it’s been about 10 months since we put our last good, old dog to sleep. The new puppy makes us smile and laugh out loud sometimes! He’s a very busy 8-week-old, and our sleep-deprived selves know there will be many challenging times before he settles into the good-old-dog stage. But he makes us smile and he’s found a place in our hearts. We see that it is good! Seeing how this one little puppy can make our hearts warm and our tired faces smile, I think how God must have felt. God created and created for six days straight – God must have been tired, too, if that’s possible! Yet, God saw that it was not just good, but “supremely good”!!
Do you ever wonder if God could see all the challenges which lay ahead for God’s creation? I think God knew and made it anyway. God tracked all the problems, meted out discipline when necessary, and sent good news whenever it was possible. Encouraging the people, God sent prophets: “Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.” Soon (in God’s good time), Jesus arrived to show all humanity The Way. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Everything came into being through the Word… What came into being through the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people.” (John 1:1-4) I bet God was smiling. It was SUPREMELY good! I hope you find a reason to smile today; life with God is good.
