Nester Ilot Chiglo passed away on September 28, 2024, at Claddagh Senior Living in Caledonia, Minn.
Nester was born at home on July 20, 1932, to Peter Sr. and Myrtle Sveen Chiglo. He was baptized and confirmed at the Whalan Lutheran Church. He started school in the Whalan, Minn., public school and went to high school in Lanesboro, Minn.
Nester started working at various regional railroad companies until he was 20 years old and was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. He served for two years and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was a committed member of the Caledonia American Legion for over 54 years and worked on the Legion Bingo crew for 34 years.
On October 17, 1953, Nester married Phyllis Thompson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro, Minn. He began working for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in 1958 in Preston, Minn., and transferred to the Caledonia office in 1964, where he worked until retirement in 1994. Nester enjoyed working with many farmers and implementing conservation practices on farms around Houston and Fillmore County.
Nester thoroughly enjoyed his friendships with his many neighbors, spending time with family, and watching his 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren grow up, following their activities closely.
Nester is survived by Phyllis, his wife of over 70 years; daughters Pam (Tim) Schieber, Kari (Jerome) Neumann of Caledonia, Minn.; sons Jan (Laura) Chiglo of Green Bay, Jay (Kara) Chiglo of Frisco, Tex., and Jon (Sherri) Chiglo of Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren Dawn (Jeremy) Klinski, Audrey (Ryan) Staggemeyer, Andrew Neumann, Alex Chiglo, Mackenzie (Tyler) Leikam, Zach Chiglo, Megan Chiglo, Grace Chiglo, Nick Chiglo, Ethan Chiglo and Kate Chiglo; great-grandchildren Eli, Owen, Noah, Nora, and Clara Staggemeyer, Savanah, Anna, Ezra, and Nadia Klinski, and Theodore and Philomena Leikam; brother Stanley (Margaret) Chiglo, Mary Hanson, Orlean Strand, Sandra Solberg, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceeded in death by parents Peter Sr and Myrtle Chiglo, brothers Maynard, Roger, Peter Jr., and Jerry; and sister Pearl Murphy.
Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour before the service. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, assisted the family.
