Michael Himlie
Candidate for Harmony City Council
1. Tell us about yourself.
My name is Michael Himlie, I have lived in Harmony most of my life. I graduated from Fillmore Central in 2012 and Manchester University in 2017. After college I lived in Europe and the Middle East providing unarmed protection for civilians in war zones and documenting human rights violations and war crimes. Locally, I have worked in retail for 10 years, education, agriculture, tourism, and am a small business owner. When I am not working or volunteering I am outdoors appreciating the Bluff Country.
2. Why are you running for office?
I am running for Harmony City Council because I have time and energy to serve, value the community that raised me, and want to give back in a similar manner. Growing up, I knew very little about what the city council did. Now I know that the city council is one of many cogs in a system that makes Harmony a thriving and successful city. Decisions that are made by the city council are to represent and give back to the place we call home and the people we share it with. This is what I will contribute to.
3. What do you hope to accomplish if you get elected?
If elected to the Harmony City Council, I will work together with my fellow council members to best represent the people of Harmony. For the first time in many years, Harmony is updating its Comprehensive Plan, something that will shape our community for decades to come. I hope to be involved in the Comprehensive Plan and other valued boards. I will also work to bring more Harmony voices to the table when it comes to decisions impacting Harmony today and for years to come.

Dear Fillmore County Journal,
I had the pleasure of getting to know Michael and his mother over dinner in London a few weeks ago. They were travelling around Europe and were staying with a mutual friend in Harrow. Whilst he shared many stories about his travels through Europe his stories about Harmony, his neighbours and his town showed the love and pride he has for his home. I understand he’s now been elected to represent his community so I wanted to congratulate you all and am excited at the changes that Michael will bring to the City Council table in his new role.
