Mervin E. Nelson, age 77, of rural Mabel, died after a short battle with cancer on Monday, November 4, 2019, at his home.
Mervin was born February 6, 1942, in Spring Grove, Minn., to Adolph and Doris (Rank) Nelson, the youngest of 14 children. He attended country school and then the Mabel High School. He lived and farmed on the family farm his entire life. On September 7, 1968, he married Marilyn Doering at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Riceford, Minn. Marilyn passed away November 13, 2013. He was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church and enjoyed working on antique tractors, hunting, playing cards, and telling jokes.
Mervin is survived by four children Barb (Bill) Shafer of Nora Springs, Iowa, Doug (Angela) of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Kathy Nelson of Bloomington, Minn., and Kevin Nelson of Mabel; five grandchildren Jacob, Ava, and Carly Shafer, and Hunter and Abigail Nelson; four siblings Ada (Ray) Kjos, Stella Shuda, Milfred (Joan), and Doris (Gerald) Thrall; special friend Donna Donlan of Spring Grove, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, brothers William, Lorn, Melvin, Alvin, Arnold, Alfred; and sisters Viola Chesley and Alice Christopherson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel, with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Interment will be in the Riceford Cemetery. Visitation will be 4–7 p.m. Friday, November 8 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.
