Marvin M. Slafter, 81, of rural Mabel, died Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at his home.
Marvin was born October 5, 1943, in rural Rochester, Minn. He attended Canton High School before serving in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. Marv’s favorite memories of his time in the service involved the experiences he had while stationed in Germany with a Polish unit.
On March 4, 1967, Marvin was united in marriage to Marian “Jean” Stevens in Lanesboro, Minn. The couple purchased a farm north of Mabel in 1969 and have resided there since. Of their 58-year marriage, Marv was fond of saying, “That’s eight years longer than forever.”
Farming, hunting and motorcycling were among Marvin’s favorite pastimes. He especially loved his annual trips to Sturgis, S. Dak. In their later years, Marv and Jean thoroughly enjoyed their frequent visits to area coffee shops. Weekly outings with his good friend Joe Pellowski were also a highlight.
Marvin is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Micky, son Steve (Jennifer), and granddaughters Saijal and Savannah (Brenden) Kerns; his brother Merrill (Pat) and sisters Jennie (Jerry) Kyseth and Sharon (Larry) Walker. Marvin is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his sister Edith (Jerry) Serafine, as well as his brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Jerry Kyseth.
Per Marv’s request, no service is planned.
The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
