Marvin Hovden

June 18, 2024 by Fillmore County Journal

Marvin Hovden obituary, Fillmore county Journal

Marvin Hovden, age 93, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa.

A cele-bration of life will be held for Marv on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 3-7 p.m. at the Winneshiek County Fair Community Building.  Burial will be in the Russell Cemetery at a later date.

Marvin Hovden was born on April 5, 1931, to Carmen and Myrtle Hovden.  His father died when Marv was just 12 years old; he quit school to help his mother with the farming.  He was still unloading corn this last fall.  That’s 81 years of farming!

Marv married Donna Casey on September 23, 1952.  Together they had six children.  Marv’s great passion besides farming was tractor pulling.  He and Donna traveled to many pulls over the years.  In 1978, he was invited to the National Tractor Pull in Louisville, Ky.  This was a huge pull and huge privilege to be invited to compete.  Marvin won that pull.

Marv is survived by his six children and their families: David Hovden and his kids Tera (Kevin) Mathis (Kashton, Holden and Lincoln), and Tessia (Jon) Wangsness (Cael and Kaci);  Daryl Hovden and his kids Andy (friend Maren Kraling) Hovden, Jake (Melanie) Hovden, (Walker), and Linda Hovden;  Dan (Sally) Hovden and their kids Shauna, Molly, Maggy and Knute; Denise (Gary) Baumler and their kids Cavin (Kenzi Jones) Baumler and Carston Baumler; Dean (Rhonda) Hovden and their kids Hannah (Jordan) Young (Colton, Kinley and Weston), and Heath (Kayla Smith) Hovden (Sage); Dale (Tina) Hovden and their kids Kelsey (Paul) Seabrooke (Adley and Kade), Kenzie (friend Tracy Tweten) Hovden; sisters Sarah Otteson, Mary Teslow, Dorothy (Larry) Brooks and Georgiann (DuWayne) Schweinefus, sisters-in-law Ina Hovden and Kate Hovden, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, parents Carmen and Myrtle Hovden, grandson Karmen John Hovden, brothers Donald and Carmen Hovden,  sister Kay (John) Regan, father- and mother-in-law:- John (Rose) Casey, sisters and brothers-in-law Eleanor (Joe) Curtain, Donald (Kay) Casey, Donald Graves, Dave Otteson, Curt Cornelius, Kenny Engrebretson and Hubert Teslow.
