Marlo Mensink obituary, Fillmore county Journal

Marlo Mensink, 83, of Spring Valley, Minn., died on September 16, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born July 2, 1941, in York Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to Virgil and Jessie (Vrieze) Mensink. He grew up in the Cherry Grove, Minn., area on a farm with two sisters and two brothers. He attended country school through the eighth grade. In the ninth grade he attended the Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, Minn., and graduated from there in 1959. He farmed with his dad. He married Janice Irene Freimark on October 13, 1962. Together they had two sons and two daughters.

Marlo was a dairy farmer. He worked for the Spring Valley Sales Company for several years and worked for the York Township doing road maintenance as well as mowing roadsides for Glen Van Grevenhof and Joe O’Connell. In 2020, he and his wife moved to Spring Valley, Minn.

Marlo was an active member of the Cherry Grove United Methodist Church and was on the board of trustees for many years. He enjoyed the Cherry Grove Cowboy Church where he was an usher since it started in 2017.

Marlo enjoyed coon, pheasant and deer hunting, fishing and playing cribbage. He enjoyed time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlo is survived by his wife Janice, sons Brent Mensink and Derek (Rachel Bishop) Mensink, daughters Andrea (Steve) Atwood and Natalie (Jeff) Atwood, 12 grandchildren: Steven (Mandy) Mensink, Jennifer Mensink, Amber Thompson, Nick (Jessica) Atwood, Brooke (Michael) Carr, Karly (Hunter) Irish, Isaac Atwood, Shayla Mensink, Luke Mensink, Neysa (Matt) Schorr, Jasmin (Peter Ongera) Atwood, and Justin Atwood; 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, sisters Donna (David) Oeltjen and Marchel (Kevin) Comstock, brother Verdon Mensink, and brothers-in-law Ronald, Gerald “Jerry” and Kenneth Freimark; sisters-in-law Darlene Jordahl and Bonita Freimark, and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Jessie Mensink, his father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Irene Freimark, grandson Dustin Atwood, great-granddaughter HopeRose Joseph, daughter-in-law Joanna Mensink, brother and sister-in-law Wallace and Janice Mensink, brothers-in-law William Musel and Arthur Jordahl, sisters-in-law Lorayne Freimark, Constance Freimark and Darlene Mensink; nieces Julie Freimark Goldsmith and  Rhonda Foster, and Bob Howe, a “special brother from another mother.”

Funeral services for Marlo will be held at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024, with Pastor Deanna Woodward and Pastor Mark Woodward officiating. Burial will take place at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Valley, Minn. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley on Sunday, September 22.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family.

A special thank you goes out to St. Croix Hospice and our family members for taking such wonderful care of Marlo and for making it possible for him to be at home.
