Fillmore County Journal - Marian Haskovec Obituary

Marian A. Haskovec, 96, of Cresco, Iowa, died Monday, October 26, 2020, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marian will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 2, 2020, at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, with Father Jacob Rouse officiating. Services are open to the public. Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2020, at Notre Dame Parish. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

Marian Alberta Hauber was born August 11, 1924, in rural Winneshiek County to Albert and Della (Scheidel) Hauber.  While at a dance at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville, Marian met her future husband John. On November 17, 1943, Marian was united in marriage to John Haskovec at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Plymouth Rock. Of this union two children were born, Richard “Rick” and Kathleen “Kathy.” Marian worked alongside John on their farm.  Once the kids were out of the house, Marian became John’s main fishing partner and they would go out fishing all the time.

Throughout Marian’s life, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting, among other crafts.  She had a green thumb and loved working in her garden.  Marian was a wonderful pie maker; her family loved all her pies.  However, the one that stands out the most is her delicious banana cream pie.  Marian was very active in the ladies groups and funeral choir at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony, Minn., and Notre Dame in Cresco.  After church, Marian would play cards with her family; the most notable games were euchre and 500.  Marian also loved to bird watch, especially cardinals.  She had a talent of whistling to the birds, and they would whistle back to her.  She loved her family and loved spending time with all the little ones.

Marian is survived by her children Rick (Marilyn) Haskovec of Preston, Minn., and Kathy Ziegler of Mason City, Iowa; grandchildren: Michael (Colleen) Ziegler of Houston, Tex., Michele (Mike) Dirksen of Ogden, Iowa, Valerie (Erik) Zirbes of Kasson, Minn., Jeffery (Sofi) Haskovec of Dallas, Tex., and Angela (Shane) Bonner of Germantown, Wis.; great-grandchildren: Dylan, Logan, Taylor, Shelbi, Eli, Kaylee, Devon, Aidan, Keira, Zoe, James, Heidi, and Joe; and great-great-grandchildren Elijah and Zoey.

Marian is preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 1995, son-in-law Ron Ziegler, brothers George Hauber, Gerald Hauber, and her sisters June Ryan, Rose Ryan, Rita McCabe, Betty Sexton, and Norma Jean Smith.

Due to COVID-19, social distancing will be practiced and masks are encouraged.
