The Mabel-Canton FFA is a growing organization with around 30 students involved, led by an officer team of seven. The FFA advisor is Carlena Gallagher. M-C FFA really focuses on career exploration, community service and sharing the story of agriculture. Last fall the FFA helped run the bounce houses, hog raffle and other activities at Steam Engine Days. During the second week of school they hosted a judging competition, known as Miller Invitational. There are over 200 participants that attend this annual event. Students compete in Dairy Judging and General Livestock at regional competition last fall and look forward to doing more next year. Another event our officer team attended was the Fall Leadership Day at RCTC with all of the other FFA teams in our region. Members also attended the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis. While at the National Convention these students took tours of different places like John Deere, and Caterpillar, attended ceremonies and career seminars for three days, explored the shopping mall.
Mabel-Canton FFA will be having a FFA week activities February 16-20.They will have dress-up days throughout the week. On Wednesday there will be a petting zoo in the small engine room from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The officers will be presenting to the elementary school on how food gets to their plates and where it comes from. There will be a farmer and local businesses FFA sponsored breakfast at the community center on Friday, February 20 from 6:30-8 a.m. Also on Friday there will be an Ag Olympics for the high school students to compete.
In the spring some members will be attending the FFA State Convention in Minneapolis. While they are there, they will take part in some workshops, compete in Dairy judging and listen to speakers. They look forward to growing our involvement in the community and finding ways to share agriculture with more people.
