Lowell Edgar Tollefson was born on January 21, 1932, son of Laurence and Elsie (Abrahamson) Tollefson. Lowell was born on the farm his family settled in 1853. In 1863 Havendale Farm was homesteaded and still is cared for by the Tollefson family. Lowell’s roots ran deep in Havendale Farm; it was his life’s passion to care for the land that has been in his family for 170 years. Besides crop farming, Lowell also had a herd of dairy cows. Lowell worked the ground until he was 81, and continued caring for the farm into his 90s.
In the late 1960s, Lowell was set up on a blind date with a young teacher by the name of Sara Lu Greeley. On March 16, 1968, they were married at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston. Together they had two sons, Michael and Kevin. Early on in their marriage Lowell enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and talking about farming with friends and neighbors. On the rare occasion that he was able to step away from the farm, he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing for walleye. After selling the dairy cows, Lowell and Sara were able to travel all over the United States and even to Norway where they visited the farm from which Lowell’s ancestors originated.
Lowell is survived by his wife Sara of Preston, two sons, Michael (Heather) Tollefson of St. Peter, Minn., and Kevin (Kate) Tollefson of Shoreview, Minn.; six grandchildren: Maija Tollefson, Dayne Tollefson, Emily Imm, Ryan Imm, Will Tollefson, and Owen Tollefson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Laurence and Elsie, and his sister Mildred “Millie” (Jual “Bud”) DeLaitsch.
