Lorrinea Helen Munkel, aged 94, of Lime Springs, Iowa, passed away at Regional Health Services of Howard County in the early hours of February 14, 2023. She had several of her children at her side as she passed into the Lord’s hands.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Lorrinea was born in York Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to John H. and Theresa A. (Ott) Leibold. She was one of seven siblings growing up on a farm in rural York Township and attended country school through 8th grade.
Lorrinea met Donald (Pete) Lloyd Munkel and the couple were married at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Chester, Iowa on August 22, 1950. This marriage was blessed with four children: Sandra Stocks, Rochester, Minn., Ronald Munkel, Panora, Iowa, Carolyn Munkel, Lime Springs, Iowa; and Brenda Oberbroeckling (Darryl Manders), Cresco, Iowa.
Lorrinea was a loving wife and mother – always there for her family. Her main focus in life was to maintain a loving and caring home environment for her children. This included making sure that the family regularly attended Mass to nourish the soul. Nourishment of the body was also high on her priorities. She demonstrated her fantastic cooking skills daily. Much to her families’ delight, she regularly made pies that were always made to perfection.
She took great delight and had a great love for her grandchildren Jessica Ditlevson, Kasson, Minn., Jacqueline Stocks, Rochester, Minn., and Derek Oberbroeckling, Waukee, Iowa; and great-grandchildren Kaya, Brady, Jalyn, Jace, and Javon. She always enjoyed visiting with her numerous nieces and nephews. She also took delight in her constant furry companions over the years. Especially the most recent, “Cocoa.”
Lorrinea was a long time member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa, and more recently the Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa.
Lorrinea is survived by her sister Cecelia Hall of Leroy, Minn., and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Theresa, husband Donald, and five brothers: Leo, Edwin, Raymond, Arnold, and Raphael.
