Every spring across southeast Minnesota, graduating seniors receive scholarship awards funded by local memorials, churches, businesses, civic groups, and community organizations.

The Fillmore County Journal contacted school districts throughout the region requesting information about scholarship totals, major awards, and long-running local scholarship programs.

Caledonia Area Public Schools

Caledonia Area Public Schools reported approximately $47,966 awarded during the 2024-2025 school year, with 31 students receiving one or more scholarships.

The Ellingson Scholarship and District 299 Foundation scholarships rank among the district’s larger programs.

Support also comes through memorial funds, businesses, cooperatives, financial institutions, MiEnergy, AcenTek, and the Caledonia Fire Department.

Chatfield Public Schools

Chatfield Public Schools reported $162,600 distributed to 37 students in 2025.

Although many scholarships already existed through memorial funds and local organizations, the school formally organized its scholarship program in 2014.

Representatives also noted that graduating classes have funded scholarships since 1977.

Organizations contributing scholarship support include the Chatfield Lions Club, Chatfield Firefighters, Chatfield Fish and Game Club, Root River State Bank, local churches, and other community groups.

District officials said several scholarships have existed within the community for decades.

Fillmore Central Schools

Fillmore Central officials said the district typically has around 30 local scholarships available each year, although the total changes depending on new programs and annual renewals.

Approximately 10 scholarships come from families honoring loved ones, while roughly 20 are funded through businesses and organizations.

Annual scholarship totals generally range between $50,000 and $80,000.

Representatives also said every senior meets with staff members to review scholarship opportunities and application requirements. Students receive packets containing available applications before deciding which programs they qualify for and wish to pursue.

“Fillmore Central appreciates the generosity of each and every one of our local scholarship donors,” district representatives stated.

Houston Public Schools

Houston officials said scholarship support continues through cooperatives, local businesses, memorial funds, sportsmen’s clubs, and civic organizations.

One of the district’s larger awards is the Paul Wheaton Memorial Scholarship, which provides approximately $10,000 to a student.

Organizations helping support graduating seniors include MiEnergy, AcenTek, Farmers Win Cooperative, the Houston Lions Club, Sheldon Valley Sportsman’s Club, and the Hurricane Foundation.

Officials also highlighted the Bluff Country Hidden Heroes Scholarship and the Rushford State Bank Scholarship.

Kingsland Public Schools

One of Kingsland’s largest scholarship programs remains the Osterud/Winter Trust, which has distributed around $40,000 annually since 1994.

Kingsland awards roughly $100,000 in scholarships each year, with 24 students receiving scholarships during the 2025-2026 school year.

Some of the district’s larger awards include the Howard and Lois Brekke Scholarship, Charlie and Irene Reps Scholarship, and the Thauwald Family Scholarship.

Support also comes from veterans organizations, service clubs, businesses, and other community groups throughout the Spring Valley area. Newer programs include the Spring Valley Public Utilities Scholarship and the Doug Bergey Memorial Scholarship.

Mabel-Canton Public Schools

Mabel-Canton Public Schools distributed $39,070 to 15 students in 2025.

District records show annual scholarship totals have commonly ranged between $20,000 and $30,000 in recent years.

Organizations supporting local students include the Mabel Lions Club, Mabel Telephone Cooperative, Mabel Fire Department, MiEnergy Cooperative, and several memorial scholarships honoring former residents and community members.

Rushford-Peterson Schools

Rushford-Peterson Schools awarded approximately $80,000 to 23 students in 2025.

One of the district’s largest programs is the “Pay It Forward Scholarship,” established by two graduates from the Class of 1997.

According to school officials, the scholarship provides $10,000 annually for up to four years, allowing one student to receive up to $40,000.

The program places importance on perseverance, humility, ambition, and community involvement rather than focusing strictly on grades.

Additional scholarship funding comes through memorial programs, agricultural groups, veterans organizations, local banks, and the Rushford-Peterson Foundation.

Spring Grove Public Schools

Spring Grove Public Schools reported $102,025 awarded to 26 students in 2025.

Several scholarship programs have existed for decades, including the Burtness Family Valedictorian Scholarship established in 1990 and the Carlton Kroshus Scholarship Fund created in 2002.

Other major awards include the SG STEM Scholarship, Sundet Foundation Scholarship, Norman Lloyd Ellingson Scholarship, and Charles and Audrey Ellingson Scholarship.

The district also administers the “Scholar Dollars” program, which distributes awards ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Several scholarships specifically support students pursuing healthcare, agriculture, construction trades, public service, and STEM-related careers.

Regional Scholarship Support

District representatives throughout the region said scholarships help offset post-secondary education and training costs for students and families.

Several districts highlighted scholarships supporting students specifically pursuing trades, agriculture, healthcare, construction, education, STEM, and other workforce careers.

Editor’s Note: The Fillmore County Journal also contacted Lanesboro, Grand Meadow, and LeRoy-Ostrander schoools, requesting scholarship information. Complete responses were not available prior to publication.
