It was an eventful week of volleyball for the second-place Spring Grove girls who won the Oct. 11 rematch with third-place Lanesboro, 3-0, which set up the Oct. 14 rematch with division-leading and state-ranked No. 6 Mabel-Canton. In between on Oct. 12, the Lions completed a season sweep of Houston, 3-0. Mabel-Canton came into the SEC East Division showdown having already clinched a share of a 24th consecutive conference championship and was able to leave with the outright crown after an exciting 3-2 road win, edging Spring Grove 15-13 in the deciding extra fifth set. The Lions (15-7, 11-2 SEC) came ever so close to sharing their first conference title in 37 years (1984) in front of an appreciative, frenzied home crowd. All three were home matches.
The Lion B-team girls (14-2, 11-1 SEC) swept all three matches and avenged their lone league loss with an 2-1 win against Mabel-Canton with the third set score of 18-16. The C-team (10-1, 8-0 SEC) also vanquished all three freshmen-team opponents in straight 2-0 sets.

Spring Grove 3, Lanesboro 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21)
A stunning, late eight-point run closed out the second set, and Spring Grove went on to take all three closely-contested sets. Both squads attacked much better than they had the previous week at Lanesboro. But again, the Lions were more efficient hitters, 22% to 16%, with 35 kills and 5 scoring blocks to 34 kills, 2 blocks for the Burros. Grove also held a 5-point scoring margin at the service line.
All three sets were tight at the end. The Lions led set one, 13-3, but the Burros ran off four straight late points to get back within two, 24-22, before it ended with a service error. Set two went the other direction with Lanesboro breaking an 11-11 tie with a 6-to-1 run. Trailing 21-17, Spring Grove, paced by two ace blocks (Lydia Solum, Brielle Neeley) and three service aces from Maggie Lile, scored the final eight points to win, 25-21.
Set three saw Spring Grove nurse early leads before the Burros caught up at 16-all. Lanesboro never took the lead, but it was 21-20 before three Addyson McHugh kills helped the Lions win four of the final five points.
McHugh finished with 15 kills, 3 ace serves and a block assist while Kenadee Gerard pounded home 14 kills plus a solo block. Lile served only eight times (8 for 8) but with 3 aces plus scoring with 2 kills on only 8 attacks in addition to assisting on 3 other kills. She paced the defense with 14 digs, while McHugh and Rachel Normann each had 10 saves and Julia Halverson 9. Normann assisted on 30 of the 35 Lion kills.
Lanesboro (15-9, 7-4) suffered a fourth league loss, two each to Mabel-Canton and Spring Grove.

Spring Grove 3, Houston 0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-15)
The Lions served 96% with 13 aces and poured in 40 kills to the Hurricanes’ 14 while extending their winning streak versus Houston to 17. Spring Grove leads the all-time series 94 to 16. The ‘Canes served a strong 97% with 4 aces, but they struggled to return serve and pass from the back row and terminate at the net with one more hitting error than kills. The total error count was almost the same (SG 19, Hou 18), but Houston generated little offense.
Normann supplied 31 assists while McHugh and Gerard finished off 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Solum scored with 7 kills on only 11 attacks (45% efficiency) and served 12 for 12 with an ace. Nine different Lions were credited with kills, and five scored from the service line. McHugh sizzled, with the serve, going 13 for 14 with 6 aces. Normann served 12 for 12 with 3 aces. Sydney Holland tallied with 2 aces on only four serves (4 for 4). Lile led the back row with 16 digs while scoring with 5 kills and an ace serve along with 4 assists.

Mabel-Canton 3, Spring Grove 2 (MC 25-23, SG 25-22, MC 25-19, SG 26-24, MC 15-13)
Spring Grove was responsible for the most points – good and bad. The Lions actually had seven more kills (67-60) and three times as many ace serves (12 to 4), but they also had 18 more total scoring mistakes. Both teams served 93%.
Set one was tied at 18-all before the Cougars separated with a 4-point run and would win by two, 25-23. The Lions never trailed in the second set, but led only 21-20 before they took four of the final six points.
Grove led 5-1 in set three, but the Cougars would soon run off seven straight points to go ahead 10-7 and never relinquish the lead on the way to a six-point win, 25-19. Mabel-Canton was exceptional with only two errors. The Lions led for much of set four, but it was tied 11 times, finally at 24-all. Spring Grove saved a match point at 23-24 with a kill by Solum. Solum then served an ace, and Gerard finished it with a kill for the 26-24 Lion win. And there was pandemonium in the gymnasium as the match went to a fifth asset.
In the first-team-to-15 points finale, the Cougars looked safe with a 9-5 lead, but Grove tallied the next four points with kills from Gerard, Lile and Neeley before Gerard tied it at 9-9 with an ace serve. The Lions would tie it again at 10 and 11 before leading for the first time at 12-11. Another McHugh kill tied it for the final time at 13. But the Cougars edged ahead with a free-ball kill and then won it with a tip kill, 15-13.
Gerard (26% hitting efficiency) and McHugh (23%) each had 26 kills. Gerard served 5 aces and McHugh 3. Solum served 15 for 16 with 2 aces while Halverson served 19 for 19 with an ace. Norman served 17 for 18 with an ace in addition to 51 assists. Halverson and Lile dug 34 and 32 times, respectively. McHugh had 21 digs and Normann 20.
At the net, Spring Grove’s 17% attacking efficiency was greatly improved from the 3% in their previous match versus Mabel-Canton. But it would not be quite enough to overcome the Cougars 20%. It was the Lions’ 10th consecutive loss to their perennially state-ranked neighbor, who improved to an impressive 27-3 (13-0 SEC).
