Lions strike early, quickly in runaway road win over Kingsland

October 24, 2022 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

Spring Grove blitzed Kingsland with 35 first-half points on the way to an eventual 41-20 decision on Oct. 14 at Spring Valley. Elijah Solum (13-for 17, 266 yards passing) threw four touchdown passes over the Kingsland secondary to four different receivers. Also, a 27-yard pass and run to Tysen Grinde went to the Knight 12-yard-line. Solum scored on the next play, one of his two rushing scores and therefore statistically responsible for all six Lion touchdowns. State-ranked No. 6 Spring Grove remained undefeated at 7-0 (7-0 sub-district) while the Knights left the field at 3-4 (3-3 sub-district). The Lions have won all four contests versus Kingsland.

While Kingsland had the ball most of the night (66 plays), Spring Grove was highly efficient while running only 44 plays to score 41 points. The Lions needed only five plays while scoring on their first three possessions, all passes: 66 yards to Caleb Griffin (4-88 yards receiving), 25 yards to Ethan Crouch (3-42 yards receiving) and 46 yards to Grinde (5-95 yards receiving). It was 35-0 at halftime after Solum’s four-yard TD run and 37-yard TD pass to Jaxon Strinmoen. It was 41-0 after the Lions’ first possession of the second half. A 21-yard interception return by Strinmoen set up the second Spring Grove TD. Griffin kicked 5 of 6 extra points.

Burdened by five turnovers, Kingsland finally got on the scoreboard with a 12-play, 60-yard drive late in the third quarter. The Knights scored again after returning a Lion fumble to the 2 yard-line. Another 12-play possession covered 74 yards for the third Kingsland score with just over a minute to play. All three KHS touchdowns came on short runs by Mason Kolling, Kale Mensink and Kaaleem Reiland.
