Lions Girls Alone in the Lead After Win Versus Hurricanes

February 16, 2024 by Lee Epps

This showdown featured the only two teams still undefeated in Southeast Conference play. Spring Grove seized sole possession of the league lead with a 65-44 win over visiting Houston. It was close – until it was not. The Hurricanes (8-6, 5-1 SEC) led 25-20 at halftime and trailed by only three points about halfway through the second half. Then Houston added only one basket and a pair of free throws during the final eight and half minutes. Taylor Elton’s Lions (14-2, 7-0 SEC) scored 22 of the game’s final 26 points and extended its winning streak versus the ‘Canes to 13 games.

Kinley Soiney hit four 3-pointers and led Grove with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double while Avery Kingsley (also four treys) put in 21 points for Houston. But three Lions scored in double figures with Emerson Ingvalson scoring 14 points to go with 6 assists and 5 steals. Siri Konkel added 12 points along with 5 assists and no turnovers.

Spring Grove shot a good 32% (9 for 28) from 3-point land and a good 40% overall. After their late scoring drought, the Hurricanes finished at 32% from the field. Besides shooting better, Grove also shot more often with only 8 turnovers to Houston’s 19.

Spring Grove dominated the B-team game, 45-25. However, Houston took both the eighth grade game, 39-14 and the seventh grade game, 25-22.
