It was quite a volleyball contrast for Spring Grove, which began the week with a home victory versus winless and hapless Schaeffer Academy (0-2, 0-1 SEC) and then went on the road to take on state-ranked No. 2 Mabel-Canton (9-0, 3-0 SEC). The Lions overwhelmed those Schaeffer Lions, 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-8) and then won the first set at Mabel-Canton before being overtaken by the Cougars, 3-1 (25-22 SG, 25-20 MC, 25-15 MC, 25-19 MC). In a battle for the league lead, it was the first setback of the season for Spring Grove (3-1, 3-1 SEC), and Mabel-Canton remained the only SEC team without a loss.
SG 3, Schaeffer 0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-8)
It was decided with the serve. Spring Grove served a whopping 27 aces and with 12 service errors, scored most of the visitors’ 21 total points. Each of the six SG servers had at least two aces. Emerson Ingvalson served three times with two aces. Kendal VanMinsel scored with six aces on only 12 servers, Jada Strinmoen five aces on 11 serves and Katie Klug four instant winners on only seven serves.
Schaeffer managed only 28 attacks, while Grove scored with 28 kills. Joelle Halverson scored with eight kills on only nine attacks (no errors), Ingvalson six kills with only eight attacks and VanMinsel 4 kills on only seven attempts (no errors).
The B-team defeated Schaeffer 2-0; the junior high Red Team won 2-1
Mabel-Canton 3, SG 1
It was an exhilarating start and first-set win for Spring Grove, but overall, the Cougars were the better handlers, mounting 21 more attacks, resulting in 10 more kills. Each team served 90%, but serve receive was strong, and aces were difficult to achieve (MC 7, SG 2). Both squads served more errors than aces.
Neeley was the most efficient Lion at the net (47% efficiency) with 18 kills. Hailey Normann (30%) put away 12 kills and VanMinsel had 36 assists. Sydney Holland was busy on defense with 19 digs while Katelyn Kraus dug 13 times along with 11 digs from Halverson and 10 from VanMinsel.
In set one (25-22), each team had 15 kills, two blocks and no ace serves. The Lions had three fewer errors and won by three points. Grove led 17-10 before the Cougars fought back within one (22-21) before the Lions prevailed with kills from Normann and Neeley.
In set two (25-20), Spring Grove had both the most kills but also the most total errors and fell by five points. It was tied for the seventh time at 19 before four Lion errors helped the Cougars close with a 6-to-1 run.
In set three (25-15), the Lion offense created the fewest attacks and fewest kills of the match. Mabel-Canton led throughout and won comfortably by 10.
In set four (25-19), the Lions led early 6-1, but the Cougars used six straight kills on only seven attacks to move ahead 21-16. With three more earned points and three fewer errors, Mabel-Canton won by six.
The Lions won the B-team match, 2-0 while the C-teams tied 1-1. In junior high, Mabel-Canton defeated both the Lion Red team 2-1 and the Black team 3-0.
