Spring Grove closed the 2023 volleyball regular season with a 21-6 record after winning four matches and dropping one for a third-place finish at the Goodhue Tournament and then a 3-0 conference road romp at Austin versus Lyle/Pacelli (25-11, 25-10, 25-6). The lone tournament loss came against Class AA state-ranked No. 3 Chatfield.
The Lions, at 12-2 in Southeast Conference action, finished as runner-up in the SEC East Division, two matches behind champion Mabel-Canton (14-0 SEC) and five matches ahead of third-place Lanesboro (7-7).
GOODHUE TOURNAMENT
SG 2, Hayfield 0 (25-18, 25-15)
Joelle Halverson led with 7 kills, while Katelyn Kraus was efficient with 5 kills on only 9 attacks.
SG 1, Alden-Conger 1 (23-25, 25-21)
The Lions dropped the first set but came back to take the second set and was credited with the win with the most points scored. Jordis Neeley had 8 kills, Hailey Normann 4 kills with no errors.
SG 2, Medford 0 (26-24, 25-17)
Neeley led with 10 kills as the Lions remained unbeaten in pool play.
Chatfield 2, SG 0 (25-15, 25-21)
The state-ranked Gophers (22-2) wrapped up the pool play crown. It was only the second match all season that the Lions had more hitting errors (18) than kills (11.)
SG 2, LeRoy-Ostrander (25-13, 25-20)
The Lions defeated conference rival LeRoy-Ostrander in the third-place match between pool-play runners-up. Neeley put away 10 kills. SG had previously clipped the Cardinals during conference action, 3-0.
SEC VOLLEYBALL
SG 3, Lyle/Pacelli 0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-6)
Lyle/Pacelli scored only 27 points – 10 on their own merit and 17 coming from Spring Grove miscues. Meanwhile, the Lions scored with 31 kills (30% efficiency) and 5 blocks at the net and served 21 aces. Neeley served 8 aces while Emerson Ingvalson served 5 (16 for 17) and Katie Klug 4 (13 for 13). Halverson had 10 kills with only 16 attacks (63%). Kendal VanMinsel assisted on 20 kills and scored with 3 kills, 2 solo blocks and 2 ace serves. The Athletics finished at 5-21 (2-12 SEC), almost the opposite of the Lion record (21-6, 12-12).
The Spring Grove B-team (18-0) completed an undefeated season with a 2-0 decision at L/P. The C-team also defeated the Athletics, 2-0, and closed a one-loss season at 10-1-2.
