Lion Girls Rout Rebels Again

April 4, 2024 by Lee Epps

Kinley Soiney had an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double along with 6 steals and 6 assists with only one turnover as the state-ranked No. 20 Spring Grove girls clinched at least a share of the conference championship with a 73-41 home rout of Southland. With a season-high 73 points, the Lions (20-3, 14-0 SEC) claimed their first league title in eight years (2016) and the first 20-win season in 11 seasons (2013).  With a second setback this season to Spring Grove, the Rebels dropped to 5-16, 3-11 SEC.

Siri Konkel scored 15 points while orchestrating the Lion attack with 5 assists and defending with 5 steals. Carlie Halverson added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists with no turnovers. Kendal VanMinsel had 10 rebounds. Breeley Galle led Southland scoring with 12 points.

The Lions’ 21 steals contributed to 25 Rebel turnovers, and Spring Grove had more than twice as many rebounds, 45 to 20.

The score was tied at 7-7, and then the Lions scored 30 of the next 33 points. Leading 37-16 at halftime, Spring Grove scored the first six points of the second half. With 15 more offensive rebounds and 11 fewer turnovers, the Lions attempted many more shots (76 to 48) and shot a strong 44% from the field to the visitor’s 32%.

Even in a 32-point win on a championship night, there was a downside with the Grove girls whistled for a season-worst 21 fouls. The Rebels’ only statistical advantage was hitting 12 of 23 free throws (52%). The Lions did not shoot free throws as often or as well, 5 for 14 (36%). However, the game was not decided at the foul line or the 3-point line as Spring Grove outscored the visitors in the lane, 47-22, including a 19-4 advantage in second-chance points.

The Lions had also won at Southland back in early February, 63-48. Now, with this sixth straight win against the Rebels, Spring Grove leads the all-time series, 13 to 9. The Lion B-team also recorded a second win this season versus Southland, 35-27.
