The Spring Grove girls opened the 2023-04 basketball season with an impressive 67-34 road win at Lanesboro. With graduation losses after two straight SEC East Division championships, the Burros (1-2) trailed throughout their third game of this season.

Three Lions scored in double figures, led by Kinley Soiney with 21 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Kylie Hammel added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals.  Emerson Ingvalson supplied 12 points, 6 steals and a career-high 7 assists.

Siri Konkel put in 8 points to go with 9 assists and a career-high 8 steals. Kendal VanMinsel led all rebounders with 11. Freshman Brinley Middendorf came in to add 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Sophomore point guard Jensyn Storhoff led Lanesboro with 14 points, while Hailey Erickson collected 9 rebounds.

The Lions scored the first five points and never trailed, leading 36-21 at halftime and by as many as 37 points in the second half. In the first game of the year, the Spring Grove starting lineup consisted of two juniors (VanMinsel, Ingvalson) and three sophomores (Konkel, Hammel, Soiney).

It was the season opener for Spring Grove, but Lanesboro had opened against a pair of Class AA opponents, falling to Chatfield by 16 points before defeating St. Charles by 29. The Burros has won five of the most recent seven games versus the Lions, but Spring Grove dominates the all-time series, 50 wins to 23.

Spring Grove also coasted a win in the B-team game, 42-14. Lanesboro took the eighth grade game, 41-18, while the Lions prevailed in the seventh grade game, 21-20 in overtime.
