Lion Girls Left Behind by First-Half Rushford-Peterson Run

April 7, 2024 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls shot a season-low 29% and never recovered from Rushford-Peterson’s 15-point first-half run that spurred the Trojans to a 53-39 home win. It was the second straight loss for state-ranked No. 20 Spring Grove (20-5) but only the fourth setback in 25 games. R-P improved to 18-6.

Kinley Soiney double-doubled for the Lions with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals. Siri Konkel had 11 points. Three Trojans scored in double figures: Ellie Ekern 14 points, Torryn Schneider 11 and Nadia Happel 10.

A Soiney 3-pointer had just put SG, 13-12, but it would be the only Lion lead, quickly obliterated by that critical first-half stretch during which the Lions had five turnovers, six missed shots (mostly 3-pointers) and two missed free throws. Meanwhile, R-P was hitting 6 of 11 shots, including a trio of triples for a 27-13 lead.  A subsequent eight-point Trojan spurt made it a 20-point margin before a Konkel 3-ball made it 35-18 at halftime.

Spring Grove was successful in getting to and shooting well from the foul line (11 for 17) during the second half when the Lions outscored their hosts, 21-18. But they never got any closer than the final 14-point margin.

The Lions greatly improved their recent foul totals, whistled only 10 times allowing the Trojans only four free throws (3 for 4). Spring Grove outscored R-P in transition, 15-4, but R-P shot a hot 42% from 3-point land (8 for 19) to outscore SG by 12 points from downtown in a 14-point decision. The Lions hit only 4 of 21 shots beyond the 3-point arc.

Rushford-Peterson claimed a fifth consecutive win in the series, in which the Trojans now have twice as many wins (38) as Spring Grove (19).

The B-team game went to the Trojans, 43-20. There was a junior high split with R-P taking the eighth grade game, 39-19, and the Lion seventh graders winning a close one, 19-18.
