Lion girls left behind after competitive start at Grand Meadow

The Spring Grove girls led 10-9 after six minutes of play, but the sixth lead change – which came with a 3-point basket by Grand Meadow’s Lauren Queensland – kickstarted a 10-point Superlark run. And the final 30 minutes would not remotely resemble those first six minutes on the way to the 66-21 final count at Grand Meadow on Jan. 11.

The Lions, after scoring 10 points in the first six minutes, would add only 11 points during the final 30 minutes. It was 29-12 at halftime, and the Larks won the second half, 37-9. During that early stretch, the Grove girls did have four turnovers while hitting four of their first five shots (including a pair of 3-pointers). Thereafter, the turnovers would continue, while the hot shooting would not. The Larks had three early turnovers, but lost possession only four times during their final 45 possessions.

Addyson McHugh led Lion scoring with 7 points. The Lions were playing for the second straight game without their lone senior and season-leading scorer Jordian Leahy. Grand Meadow was a more seasoned squad with a primary playing rotation of one senior, four juniors and a freshman.

Four Superlarks scored in double figures, led by junior guard McKenna Hendrickson with 19 points and junior Kendyl Queensland with 17. Freshman Lauren Queensland added 14 points while 6-foot senior River Landers was close to a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Grand Meadow took control with offensive rebounding and finished with more offensive boards (17) than the Lions had total rebounds (12). That dozen was a season-low for Spring Grove. In addition to a 20-rebound advantage (32-12), the Superlarks used their speed to outscore the Lions, 20-0, with fast breaks.

The Larks did not shoot well beyond the 3-point arc (4 for 17, 24%), but they scored more than two-thirds of their points in the lane (46 of 66). Their overall 48% accuracy from the field was the best shooting of any Lion opponent to date. Meanwhile, Spring Grove shot 28% (close to their 30% season average). There was no relief at the foul line where the Lions were limited to a season-low four free throw attempts (1 for 4).

With this conference loss, the Lions closed the week at 4-9 (4-3 SEC). The Superlarks improved to 9-2 (5-1 SEC). It was a 10th straight win for Grand Meadow in a series that Spring Grove still leads, 36 to 31. The Superlarks also took the B-team game, 29-21, while the Lion seventh graders improved to 4-1 with a 33-3 road rout. There was no eighth grade game.
