Waukon sped away early in the second half, and what was a close 22-20 game at halftime became a 57-33 runaway at Spring Grove on Dec. 19. The Lions went 13 possessions without scoring while the Indians added 19 unanswered points. Ball-handling also went south for Spring Grove in the second half when there were nearly twice as many Lion turnovers (13) as in the first half (7). Kendal VanMinsel came down with 10 rebounds and Emerson Ingvalson 7, but Waukon won that battle as well, 50 boards to 39.

With neither team successful from 3-point range (SG 2 for 13, Waukon 2 for 14), the outcome was decided in the paint (free throw lane) where the Indians outscored Spring Grove, 45-24. The Indians took good advantage pf their size and long arms near the basket with Emma Palmer scoring 13 points along with 12 rebounds. Keira McCormick also double-doubled with 11 points and 13 boards. Speed at the guard position also paid dividends for the visitors, who achieved an 18-to-2 point margin with fast breaks.
It was a tough assignment for Spring Grove against a school with nearly four times as many students. Depth was a factor with reserves scoring nearly half (28) of Waukon’s 57 points. Nine Lions scored but no one with more than Kylie Hammel’s 6 points.
Spring Grove never led but kept things close during the first half. A driving basket from Lion freshman Carlie Halverson closed the gap to 22-20 at halftime. Grove then answered the first Waukon field goal of the second half with a Hammel bucket assisted by Addyson McHugh. But then came the telltale scoring drought.
Overall, the Grove girls shot a season-worst 20% from the field and missed most of their free throws (7 for 18, 39%). The Indians, despite cold 14% shooting from beyond the arc, still shot 35% from the field overall.
Waukon improved to 6-3 while the Lions enter the holidays at 2-4 (1-3 SEC). The Indians have now taken the last five games in this series, which they lead, 17 wins to 10. Waukon also won the B-team game by a similar margin, 47-24. Meanwhile at Caledonia, the seventh grade Lions dropped a 14-6 decision.
