Kendal VanMinsel intercepted a Fillmore Central pass with just under three seconds to play, denying the Falcons a possible game-winning shot and assuring Spring Grove a 47-46 non-conference home win. Fillmore Central had scored on three straight possessions to cut a seven-point deficit down to one point with 1:10 remaining. Both teams missed two shots from the field and Spring Grove a free throw during the last minute.
The Lions (17-2) had led 24-18 at halftime and scored the first eight points after intermission to lead by 14. The Falcons (12-8) chipped away and got as close as four at 44-40. Kinley Soiney replied with a 3-pointer to push the margin to seven with three minutes left, but Spring Grove would not score again while Fillmore was scoring the final six points of the game.
The final Fillmore Central possession began with 16 seconds to play. The Falcons were thwarted by two traps before VanMinsel’s steal removed any fading hopes of a buzzer-beater.
Some of the statistics were as close as the score. Each team had 19 turnovers; SG was whistled for 12 fouls, FC 11. The Lions had 13 assists, the Falcons 12. Both teams shot 37% from the field, but Spring Grove scored most from 3-point range, while Fillmore Central prospered most inside the arc.
Soiney led Lion scoring with 15 points to go with 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Kylie Hammel put in 14 points, while Siri Konkel added 9 points, 5 steals. For the Falcons, Kyla Hellickson double-doubled with 12 points, 13 rebounds. Kammry Broadwater had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
The Falcons led 14-12 before a 12-point Lion run put Grove up, 24-14. Fillmore Central never led again but still had a chance to win until the last three seconds. The Falcons have won nine of the last 12 meetings with Spring Grove, but the Lions still lead the series all-time, 21 wins to 19.
