A late seven-point run catapulted Kee (Lansing, IA) past the Spring Grove girls for an eventual 50-44 win. The Hawks won by six points with six more made free throws. It was only the third loss of the season for the Lions (18-3), who are now 2-2 against Iowa competition.
Sophomore Kinley Soiney had 13 points and 9 rebounds for Grove while sophomore Kylie Hammel added 12 points and 6 boards. Kendal VanMinsel shared team rebounding honors with 9 boards. The visiting Kee Hawks (16-5) received 16 points each from two guards, freshman Rylee Mudderman and sophomore Addison Winters, the latter double-doubling with 10 rebounds.
There were six lead changes with Spring Grove leading by as many as nine points and Kee by as many as six, at the end. The Lions scored the last four points of the first half to lead by four at intermission, 27-23. After a pair of lead changes, Grove was up, 39-37, before missing nine straight shots while the Hawks scored seven straight points to lead 44-39.
A 3-point basket by Izabel Kaufmann pulled the Lions within two points, 46-44, with 18 seconds to play. Then, with Grove whistled for an intentional foul, Mudderman added two free throws and Winters a 2-point field goal before the Lions got the ball back for a final missed shot.
Numbers were close. Both teams had 37 rebounds, 19 total baskets, five 3-point buckets, 25 points in the paint and 43 points from the field. But Kee won at the foul line where the Hawks had a six-point advantage in a six-point win. Kee hit 7 of 15 free throws and with only four fouls, limited the Lions to only four free throws. Spring Grove went 1 for 4.
It was only the fourth meeting between the Lions and the Hawks, with Kee winning three. The Spring Grove win came back in 1982.
The B-teams played only one half with the visitors coming out on top, 16-14.
