Spring Grove improved to 9-1 (6-1 SEC East) with a pair of 3-0 wins versus visiting Lanesboro on Sept. 19 before a Sept. 21 road trip to LeRoy-Ostrander. The first decision kept the Lions in second place in the SEC East with the Burros (8-4, 4-3 SEC East) occupying third place. With the Lions creating significantly more attacks in each match, the decisions depended on Spring Grove’s ability to finish at the net. The Lions attacked very efficiently (38%) while dominating Lanesboro, but was far less consistent (14%) while struggling past the Cardinals (10-7, 5-3 SEC West). Serving was not a positive factor for the Lions in either match.

SG 3, Lanesboro 0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-14)
The Lions attacked with 43 kills and only 11 misfires, while the Burros could not keep up with far fewer attacks and only 15 kills. Jordis Neeley (strong 42% efficiency) led with 13 kills while also scoring with 6 service aces. Emerson Ingvalson (also 42%) added 11 kills and Joelle Halverson (38%) 9 kills. Kendal VanMinsel aired up 35 assists along with 5 kills of her own. Izabel Kaufmann was the dig leader with 11.
Both teams lost ground at the service line where Grove served 10 aces but also gave away 11 points with service errors. Lanesboro served 2 aces with 4 errors. Neeley was a notable exception, serving 95% (18 of 19) with 6 aces and only one error.
The Lions led throughout with a 7-1 start in the first set, an 8-0 lead in the second set and an 8-1 beginning in the finale.
Spring Grove also took the B-team match 2-0, the C-team match 2-1, and the junior high Red match 2-1. The Burros defeated the junior high Black team 2-1.
SG 3, LeRoy-Ostrander 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23)
The Lions had 55 kills to only 30 for the Cardinals, but Grove also had more hitting errors and total errors. All three sets were in doubt until the Lions came through with a string of winning plays late in each set.
Neeley again led scoring with 13 kills, 4 aces serves and a block while defending with a team-high 8 digs. Halverson contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks. VanMinsel supplied 26 assists while scoring with 5 kills, a block and an ace serve. Katie Klug served 94% (15 for 16) with 5 aces.
The Lions trailed for most of the first set; down 19-20, Halverson came through with three kills down the stretch as SG scored six of the final eight points (25-22).
The Lions led throughout the second set but did not secure the win until scoring the final five points with three ace serves from Neeley and two closing kills from Katelyn Kraus and Halverson.
In the third set, Spring Grove was in danger, down 17-22, before three ace serves from Klug, three kills from Ingvalson and two kills from Neeley.
The B-team went to Spring Grove 2-0 while the C-team match was a 1-1 tie. The Cardinals won both junior high matches with Spring Grove Red Lions falling 2-1 and the Black squad falling 2-0.
