The Spring Grove girls enjoyed a holiday-week feast of rebounds while securing their first win ever against Class AA St. Charles, 63-27. The Lions scored exactly 63 points for the second straight game, improving to 7-1 while the home team remained winless at 0-8.
The Grove girls overcame a season-worst 25 turnovers because the Saints lost possession 40 times, including 23 Spring Grove steals. Siri Konkel and Emerson Ingvalson each had 5 steals
Neither team shot especially well (SG 37%, SC 34%) but with 15 fewer turnovers and 28 more rebounds, Spring Grove shot a lot more often. Each team shot a slightly better percentage from 3-point range (SG 38%, SC 36%) than from closer in (SG 37%, SC 33%). But the Lions did not depend on long-range success while taking the ball inside with both the pass (16 points) and the dribble (12 points) while outscoring the Saints in the paint, 42 to 11.
Kinley Soiney led Lion scoring with 16 points with Ingvalson netting 15 points and Kylie Hammel 9. Konkel (5 points), on the heels of an 8-assist performance, distributed 7 assists for the second straight game. Hammel had 4 assists with only one turnover.
Carlie Halverson (7 points) came down with 9 rebounds while Ingvalson and Kendal VanMinsel collected 8 caroms each. St. Charles had 17 total rebounds while Grove had 24 offensive boards and 21 defensive rebounds.
The Saints never led but trailed only 16-15 before the Lions closed the first half with a 21-4 scoring spurt. After taking a 37-19 advantage into the halftime locker room, Spring Grove then outscored the home team 26-8 after intermission.
It was only the sixth meeting between the two programs with St. Charles having taken the first five, including a 64-53 decision last winter. The Lion B-team (4-1) won as well, 39-32.
