The 65-50 final score was the greatest spread of the night and not indicative of what a large crowd witnessed during most of the state-ranked Spring Grove boys’ win at Mabel-Canton. The Cougars (13-12, 9-9 SEC) never led, trailed by six points at halftime (30-24), tied the score (34-34) early in the second half and were within four (49-45) with 5:54 to play before the Lions (22-3, 17-2 SEC) pulled away with an 8-to-1 run.
It was a bizarre night for Spring Grove shooters, who hit a season-high 71% of their 2-point shots while suffering through a season-worst 11% from 3-point range (2 for 18). The Lions outshot the Cougars from the field overall, 50% to 36% and played with only five turnovers.
Jaxon Strinmoen led all scorers with 20 points and with 9 rebounds, shared rebounding honors with Cougar sophomore Isaac Underbakke. Elijah Solum returned to active duty with 18 points (8 for 13, 62% shooting) while Jacob Olerud added 10 points and Ben Udstuen 9. Cayden Tollefsrud (19 points) and Tyler Larson (17 points) combined to score 36 of the Cougars’ 50 points.
Mabel-Canton prevailed from downtown with seven 3-point buckets, five from Larson and a pair from Tollefsrud. And the Cougars held a slim 30-to-28 rebounding margin. It was enough to keep things close for most of the game, but not enough to ultimately upset Wade Grinde’s SEC East Division champions.
When the dust settled, it was the Lions’ 30th consecutive win in the series they now lead 92 wins to 39. Spring Grove had enjoyed a much less dramatic 80-38 win in the teams’ earlier conference matchup. The Lion B-Team (17-4) also completed a season sweep with a 42-28 win. In closely-contested junior high action, the Cougars again won the eighth grade game, 45-40, while the Lion seventh grade squad again prevailed, 45-43.
