The Spring Grove boys (24-3) scored the final eight points of the first half of a game they won by eight. The No. 12 state-ranked Lions defeated state-ranked No. 17 Nevis, 58-50, in a Saturday afternoon game at Hamline University in St. Paul. Elijah Solum scored five points in that critical late first-half splurge and finished with a game-high 25 points (9 for 16 shooting). Jaxon Strinmoen contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds while Jacob Olerud put in 9 points and Ben Udstuen 8.
The Tigers, from Section 5A, placed fifth at last year’s state tournament where Spring Grove finished third. Nevis is located on the east end of Lake Belle Taine in north central Minnesota near Park Rapids. The Tigers (18-7) outscored the Lions 29-28 in the second half and twice got back within one point but could never pull even. Throughout the second half, the teams traded points with Grove nursing slim leads of one to five points before extending the margin to nine points late.
The Lions’ last nine points all came from the free throw line, hitting 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch. Grove made better use of trips to the charity stripe, sinking 15 of 18 free throws (83%) to the Tigers’ 11 of 19 (58%). Both teams had only moderate success with 3-point shots with the Lions hitting 3 of 11 treys (27%) and Nevis 5 for 23 (22%). For the game, Spring Grove outscored Nevis by four points from the foul line and by four points from the field.
It was the final game of the regular season with Spring Grove (24-3) having just received the No. 2 seed among 20 teams in Section 1A and Nevis (18-7) receiving the No. 1 seed in its nine-team sub-section in Section 5A.
The Lion B-team also won a close one, 60-57, to close the season with a highly successful 19-4 record.
