The Spring Grove boys persevered through a record-tying, low-scoring first half before racing away from LeRoy-Ostrander after intermission for an ultimately convincing 54-17 road win on Dec. 19. Two Lions posted double-doubles with Jacob Olerud scoring 13 points plus career-records with 13 rebounds and 8 assists. Ben Udstuen had career-highs with 13 points plus 10 boards. Jaxon Strinmoen matched the Cardinals’ team total with 17 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
It was a high-stakes contest with both squads coming in undefeated in conference play. The Cardinals slipped to 3-3, 3-1 SEC West. With a 37th consecutive win over LeRoy-Ostrander and their 38th straight win against all conference rivals, the Lions improved to 3-0, 2-0 SEC East.
The teams combined for the lowest-scoring first half in 14 years (SG 17, L-O 8), tying the all-time record of 25 points in the 25 years for which first-half scores survive. It was shooting frustration all-around before halftime with Spring Grove going 6 for 30 (20%) and L-O 3 for 20 (15%). The teams combined to hit only 4 of 30 shots from 3-point land before the break. It was no better beyond the arc in the second half (SG 3 for 16, L-O 1 for 15), but the Lions roared away by taking the ball inside, mostly with passes, and scoring 10 rebound points. Grove outscored the home team in the paint, 35 to 6. After a 17-point first half, the Lions added 37 points following halftime. The home team did not score during the final 10 minutes of the game as the 14-point Lion lead ballooned to the final 37-point spread.
Finding no solution for the Lion defense, the Cardinals scored only 8 points in the first half and a measly 9 in the second half. L-O finished with more turnovers (20) than points. The Cards were limited to only one trip to the free throw line and missed both charity shots. Camden Hungerholt came in averaging 25.6 points per game and was held to three points, the first three points of the game and the only LeRoy-Ostrander lead all night. Younger brother, freshman Reid Hungerholt scored 12 of the Cardinals’ 17 points.
The Lion B-team (2-0) scored the first 15 points and went on to clobber the Cardinals by a half-a-hundred, 66-16. The eighth grade Lions won, 59-31, and the seventh graders prevailed 49-26.
