Lion boys Defeat Falcons, 51-42

February 22, 2024 by Lee Epps

The state-ranked No. 3 Spring Grove boys had their second-fewest points of the season but limited Fillmore Central to season-low scoring in a 51-42 non-conference win at Preston. The Lions scored 10 unanswered points before halftime and then opened the second half with a 10-to-2 run. Spring Grove (14-1) has now won 13 of the last 14 contests against the Falcons (10-8).

Elijah Solum scored a game-high 14 points and secured 8 rebounds for the Lions, who received 11 points each from Jaxon and Jacob Olerud. Strinmoen also lifted a career-high 9 steals. Ben Udstuen was close to a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Ethan Crouch (6 points) had a career-high 9 rebounds. Jace Kiehne scored 13 points and Greg Kennedy 12 for the Falcons.

Both teams shot a weak rather weak 31% from the field. The Lions had one more 2-point basket, one more 3-pointer and made four more free throws. The Falcons led 18-12 before scoring on only two of their next 20 possessions (spanning halftime). Fillmore Central struggled with 20 turnovers and depended greatly on 3-point shots and hit only 3 of 27 (11%).

Emery Bartell hit five baskets both inside and beyond the 3-point arc while pouring in 27 points for the Lions in a 69-55 B-team win.
