To the Editor,
Grocery prices have gone up for all of us, but hit limited budgets hardest.
Recent suspension of SNAP and WIC programs total a loss of about $69,000/month for our neighbors in Fillmore County, mostly children and seniors.
Prolonged food insecurity hurts more than those hundreds of neighbors. The effects of a parent not having food for their child, or a senior going hungry, or a neighbor wasting away, hurts us all emotionally and economically.
The withheld thousands of dollars will not be spent at our locally-owned grocery stores, which have served us for generations. They survive on thin profit margins to offer us food here and now, and keep our dollars working in our towns.
We still have choices during these uncertain times. We can shop in our family-owned grocery stores to share with our neighbors and look after each other.
