Lester N. Gunderson

Lester N. Gunderson, of Hibbing, Minn., passed away on January 6, 2017, at the age of 93. Lester was born September 4, 1923 in Pleasantville, Wis., to Alfred and Ester Gunderson. His daughter, Cindy (Roland) Erdman and his wife, Joyce Gunderson preceded Lester in death. His daughter Karen (Kevin) Dungan and sons David (Barbara) Gunderson and Richard (Norma) Gunderson survive him.  Lester and Joyce had 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Lester lived most of his life in Fountain, Minn., where he raised his family.  He started the Gunderson Garage in Fountain in 1950 and began selling used automobiles.  In 1959, he purchased the Pontiac, Cadillac and GMC truck dealership in Preston, Minn.  Lester also owned the Preston-Fountain School Bus Service for a period in the 1960s.  In 1965, he became interested in farming, and divested himself from the automotive business in 1971.  Lester farmed until he retired from farming at the age of 72, but continued to work successfully selling cars until he retired at the age of 87.  Lester enjoyed raising horses and riding all his life.  He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. He retired to Osseo, Wis., and then to Hibbing, Minn., where he lived for several years with his granddaughter.

Lester, a part of the Greatest Generation, served in the army during World War II earning the rank of Master Sergeant.  He served with distinction and honor during the Battle of the Bulge and remained in Europe for several months after the war to assist in the repatriation of civilians and soldiers.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13 at the Fountain Lutheran Church in Fountain, Minn., with visitation with the family one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be at the Fountain Community Cemetery with military honors accorded by Fountain American Legion Post 492.  A luncheon follows the service at the church for family and friends.
