Leonard E. Leutink Jr., 77 years of age, sadly passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Mayo Clinic- St. Mary’s Campus.
Leonard was born in Rochester, Minn., on March 12, 1947. He grew up and attended school in Wykoff, Minn., graduating in 1965. In February 1967 he joined the Army, where he served as a mechanic until February 1970. During that time he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. There he met Kazuko Taira, married and returned home to start a family and continue to work as a mechanic. Divorced in 1982, Leonard finally settled in Spring Valley, Minn., with his children. Leonard was active in the community, serving at one time on the school board and as a member of the Spring Valley American Legion. He worked for the city of Spring Valley until his retirement in May 2010.
Leonard’s love of music spanned his lifetime. Being a talented guitarist and singer, Leonard found so much joy in classic country and gospel and bringing that joy to others. He could be found many days playing in community events, nursing homes, and at Cowboy Church with his cherished musical friends.
Leonard will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and veteran. He is survived by two sisters and a brother: Joann (Gary) Hamlin, Jan (Allen) Bly, and Larry (Dorinda) Leutink; three daughters: Rika Essig (Jeff Vehrenkamp), Naomi (James) Frasche, and Missy (Steve) Hanson; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is lovingly welcomed in death by his parents Leonard Sr. and Helen Leutink and daughter Lynnette Blanco.
A memorial service for Leonard will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church with Pastor Deanna Woodward officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 27 at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley and will continue from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the church. After serving his country well, Leonard will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minn.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be given to Spring Valley Living at 800 Memorial Drive in Spring Valley, Minn., 55975.
