Leona Hofner Nagel

April 1, 2024 by Fillmore County Journal

Leona Angel obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Leona Hofner Nagel, age 101, of Spring Valley, Minn., died on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Spring Valley Living in Spring Valley, Minn.

Leona was born to Christ and Marguerite (Smith) Hofner on March 12, 1923, in Fillmore County, Bloomfield Township.

She attended Etna School.  After graduation, she worked in Rochester at Waters Conley, Hafners Ice Cream Store, and Fiksdal Flower Shop.  She had a love for flowers, bringing them to church and sharing her flowers from her garden.  She had a green thumb and could talk to any plant and they would survive.

She married Russel Nagel on April 11, 1950, in Cherry Grove.  They farmed west of Granger until 1985 when retiring and moved to a house in Harmony.  She was a longtime member of the Etna Club, then Granger Homemaker Club. She was also a longtime member of Cherry Grove Church and their Ladies Aid Club.  She loved baking pies, cakes, and cooking.  You never left hungry if you visited.

Leona is survived by two children, Philip (Cindy) Nagel and Barb (Ron) Koster; five grandchildren: Nathan (Brook) Nagel, Natalie (Seth) Eskew, Aaron Nagel, Ben Koster, and Beth (Tyler) Koster; nine great-grandchildren: Kylie Fenton, Kelsey Nagel, Brady Nagel, Carson Nagel, Braxtyn Moreno, Avery Nagel, Ella Eskew, Sayde Eskew and Westyn Dickinson; siblings Walter (Dorothy) Hofner, George (Diane) Nagel, Alice Hofner; and many nieces and nephews that were close to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband Russell in 2015, three brothers: Frank, Howard and Lloyd; an infant brother and sister, both maternal and paternal parents, three nephews: Gary Nagel, Denny Hofner and  Kirk Kratz; niece Nancy Kratz, in-laws Newt and Delores Nagel, Charlie and Eunice Winter, Frances and Elmer Kratz, and Gordon Nagel.

Services for Leona will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church in Cherry Grove, Minn., with Pastor Deanna Woodward officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. prior to the start of the service.  Burial will be in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
