League-Leading Spring Grove Girls Survive Challenge from Last-Place Lyle/Pacelli

April 4, 2024 by Lee Epps

The league-leading Spring Grove girls used a 10-point run in the second half to overtake and eventually subdue last-place Lyle/Pacelli, 50-39. It was a vast departure from the Lions’ 46-point demolition of the Athletics a month previous. After leading 40-7 at halftime in that earlier game, the Lions (19-3, 13-0 SEC) played from behind during most of the first half and was down 23-21 at halftime of this rematch and still trailed, 30-27, before scoring on five straight possessions to lead 37-30. L/P (1-21, 0-14 SEC) never got close than five points during the final nine minutes.

Emerson Ingvalson, shown here during the previous game against Lyle/Pacelli, had an all-around performance in the rematch with 9 points, 8 steals, 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

Kinley Soiney had a game-high 17 points plus 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. Kylie Hammel added 11 points while Emerson Ingvalson impressed all-around with 9 points, 7 boards, 7 assists and 8 steals. Siri Konkel scored 8 points while directing the attack. For L/P, Madi Klankowski scored 15 points and Kirsten Koopal 12.

Much of the game was played in transition with the Lion defense dictating play with 23 steals, which led to 16 fast-break points. But the Athletics beat the full-court pressure for 12 fast-break points. L/P shot the ball better than SG, 52% to 37%, but with 35 turnovers, the A’s did not shoot often enough to win.

Taylor Elton’s Lions hit only 19% of their 3-point attempts (5 for 26) but attempted so many they outscored the home team by nine points from downtown in an 11-point decision. Free throws were of little consequence with so few attempts (Grove 3 for 5, Lyle/Pacelli 3 for 4).

The Lions have now won the last six games in a series they lead, 30 to 11. The Spring Grove B-team also completed a season sweep with a 46-29 win.
