Larry Neil Benson, 78, of Mabel, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. Marys Hospital, surrounded by family.
Larry was born August 21, 1944, in Spring Grove to Orlando and Tena (Dahle) Benson. He attended school in Mabel and was a member of Scheie Lutheran Church, where he also served as board president for a time. He worked as an automatic sprinkler fitter and he was a dairy farmer in Gilman, Wis. He retired to the Mabel area.
Larry loved living in the country and fixing things up to look nice, including a little house in Mabel. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a jokester and got a kick out of giving people a hard time.
Larry is survived by three daughters: Lorna (Jeff) Horwich, Leslie Benson and Lanee Benson; grandchildren Sebastian and Geneva Horwich, sisters Lois (Dale) Honsey of Chatfield and Mary (Curt) Bakke of Mabel, 11 nieces and seven nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Buddy, Robert, Laverne, Donnie and Jimmy; one sister, Lorraine (Jarvis) Peterson; three nephews, one great-niece, and a special friend, Jerilyn Knowlton.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, at Scheie Lutheran Church, rural Mabel. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military rites by the Mabel American Legion and the United States Army Honors. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Mengis Funeral Home and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
