WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released a statement on the passage of legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to repeal President Trump’s International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs on Canada. In October, similar bipartisan legislation led by Senators Klobuchar, Kaine, Paul and Warner passed the Senate 50-46.
“Congress has sent this Administration a clear, bipartisan message: they cannot continue to abuse their power to wage a trade war against one of our strongest allies. Canada is Minnesota’s top trading partner, but these chaotic tariffs are jeopardizing that relationship — and increasing costs for Minnesota families,” said Klobuchar. “We can’t afford to keep raising costs, hurting businesses, and eliminating jobs by attacking our neighbor and ally.”
The legislation would terminate last year’s emergency declaration that the Administration used to launch a trade war on Canada and would eliminate the tariffs on Canadian imports implemented as a result.
