Kingsland School Board Gathers for Project Update

August 25, 2025 by Paula Barness Leave a Comment

As the school year draws near, the Kingsland School Board gathered for their August 18 meeting to hear updates on Mother Nature’s affect on the district’s construction projects.

“We are working on the location of the solar panels, yet again. Essentially what happened was the engineers came out and took a look at the original site plan and said they thought some of the drainage panels were a little too close to the drainage ditch,” Superintendent Scott Klavetter explained. “They are working on a plan B for where to put those panels.”

The recent heavy rains proved the engineers correct as the proposed location became an area of standing water.

“The other one that mother nature has decided to help us out with is being able to put all of our new roofing to the test. It seems like every area that has been reroofed has stayed dry, but we have had multiple spots here over the weekend that have gotten wet. It is a combination of several things. We don’t believe right now that any of the spots that got wet have anything to do with new roofing that has been completed. That being said, we want to look at them while we have the experts on site to trace them down and figure out what might be causing them.

Klavetter noted one source of the leaks is suspected to be the rooftop units, which allowed water to run down into the ductwork.

“There is another spot where they suspect caulking is the issue. That work isn’t scheduled to be done until next year. Then there is the issue at the high school entrance that we’ve been having forever, where it sweats into the walls when we get these heavy rains. They are still trying to research why that happens,” Klavetter shared.

The rains have also slowed progress on the roof work. According to Klavetter, the roofers have officially cried “uncle.” “Their plan is by sometime next week is to take all of their materials and lift them right on to the roof so they are there for them to work with and out of our parking lot. The jackhammering into the actual concrete and brick they are going to try to get that done outside of the school day.”

While the work will not be completed before school resumes, Klavetter is confident the work will be done this fall.

With the first day of school looming near, concerns have mounted on whether the roadway in front of the school will be open in time.

Klavetter stated he spoke with the engineers at Bolton and Menk, who are overseeing the Tracy Road Improvement Project, and they said the goal is to have Section Avenue open by Monday, August 28 as a gravel intersection.

Other Business

The board voted to keep the meal prices the same a last year, though this may need to be adjusted after the state sets their guidelines. The ala carte price increases are as follows breakfast up $.40 to $1.50, lunch up from $1.95 to $2.50, drinks such as Gatorade, Kickstart, Propel and Bublr up five cents to $1.95 to $2.

The board approved the flexible learning plan, which saw no changes from last year, for the 2025-2026 school year.

With no changes, the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the Spanish MOU were approved for the 2025-2026 school year.
