Fillmore County Journal - Julia Ann Jacobson Obituary

Julia Ann (Grant) Jacobson, age 99, of Rushford, Minn., died Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at St. Anne’s Extended Care. She was born to Logan and Nellie (Jefferson) Grant at their farm home on Linwood Lake, Anoka County, Minn.  She grew up on the farm, attended a one room rural school, graduated as valedictorian from Anoka High School in 1936 and with high distinction from the University of Minnesota in 1940. She taught Home Economics in Alden, Cromwell, and Rushford, Minn., and worked for an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Mora, Minn. Later she taught Home Economics in the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau school system in Wisconsin.

On December 20, 1942, she married Kent A. Jacobson. Their first home was in Starbuck, Minn. In 1944 they bought the farm Kent’s grandparents had settled in 1856, in the Highland Prairie Community of Norway Township in Fillmore County. They lived there for 18 years. It was there that their three sons were born and spent their childhood. No matter where else they lived, that farm and that community remained “home” the rest of their lives.

Julia was a member of the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church and participated in its women’s activities. She taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendent. She was a member of the Wenonah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Nor-Win Lodge of Sons of Norway.

Julia is survived by her sons Kent L. Jacobson, Ross (Gloria) Jacobson, and Bern (Becky) Jacobson; nine grandchildren: Brent, Ruth (Derek), Heather, Rachel (Chris), Aaron (Lan), Jessica (Eric), Ellen (Jon), and Abby (Matt); seven great-grandchildren: Tawny, Naomi, Hailey, Isabella, Sophie, Sophia, and Amelia; and sister-in-law JoAnn Grant.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Kent A. Jacobson; brother John Grant at Iwo Jima in World War ll, her sister, Jeanette Collen; brother Logan Grant, daughter-in-law Barbara Jacobson, and grandson Mark Jacobson.

The funeral service was held  2 p.m. Sunday, September 2, at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, with the Rev. Luther Mathsen officiating. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Friends called one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in Rushford assisted the family with arrangements. Please leave a memory of Julia and sign her online guestbook at www.hofffuneral.com.
