Joseph “Joe” R. Tollefson, age 78, of Caledonia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
Joe was born on December 29, 1947, to Isaac and Florence Tollefson. He graduated from Loretto High School in 1966, where he enjoyed playing both basketball and baseball.
Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army, including a deployment to Vietnam, from 1968 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1970.
On July 6, 1973, Joe married Bonnie Poppe at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. Together they raised three children: Brian, Mark and Laura. Joe was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather.
Joe worked as a salesman for DS Electric for many years, where he built lasting relationships with customers and colleagues throughout his career.
A dedicated member of American Legion Post 191, Joe generously volunteered at countless community events and was a passionate supporter of Legion Baseball. In 2017, he was recognized during the Legion Alumni Game for his outstanding dedication to the program. Whether cheering from the stands or lending a helping hand, Joe found great joy in supporting youth baseball. He also proudly served the Caledonia Fire Department for 21 years and remained a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Joe enjoyed golfing, playing softball, hunting, and spending time in his woodshop. After retirement, he could often be found enjoying coffee and a game of cards with friends at Elsie’s. Joe never knew a stranger and was always ready to strike up a conversation, share a story, or lend a helping hand. More than anything, he treasured time spent with his family and friends.
Joe is survived by his wife Bonnie, children Brian (Sara) of Marshall, Mark (Shelly) of Caledonia, and Laura of Winona; his grandchildren Hannah, Emily, Kaylee (Nate), and Kyle; his sisters-in-law Carol Hood, Karen Meiners and Lois Tollefson; brother-in-law Neil (Sandy) Morey; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents Isaac and Florence Tollefson, his sister Shirley Morey, his brother Odin Tollefson, and his parents-in-law Carroll and Frances Johnson.
A celebration of life will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Elsie’s in Caledonia. A private military burial will be held at a later date.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Claddagh House and the Emplify Hospice Program for the compassionate care they provided Joe, with a special thank you to Suzy Kittleson.
